A bittersweet night
I also found out that NolaTrey passed away on Friday night. Apparently he had an infected tooth and the infection spread to his heart. Trey didn't have health insurance and had no way of getting his condition checked out.
He was a good man.
Good night my friend.

Photographer showcases vanishing landscapes of the Louisiana Coast
Matthew White to Share Visual Story of the Lower Mississippi River Delta
NEW ORLEANS, La. (November 23, 2009) The Port of New Orleans (www.portno.com) will host an exhibit “The End of the Great River: Photographs of the Lower Mississippi River Delta” on December 1st through 18th featuring the work of New Orleans-based photographer Matthew White. Sponsored in part by Plaquemines Parish Economic Development, the exhibit is being held in conjunction with PhotoNOLA, an annual showcase of photography in New Orleans. The exhibit is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm in the lobby of the administrative building at the Port of New Orleans. A reception will be held on December 10, 2009 from 4:00 to 6:00 pm and the public is invited to attend.
The showing of White's work will consist of fine art landscape images of the Mississippi River Delta, from Port Sulphur in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana south to the end of the three passes that drain the river into the Gulf of Mexico: Pass a Loutre; South Pass and Southwest Pass
This delta, full of history, culture, and industry, is sparsely populated and rarely seen in detail by outsiders, but is a landscape of vast beauty.
Lower Plaquemines Parish was decimated by Hurricane Katrina, and has quite a long history of fighting coastal erosion with other notable storms of the past. The goal of this photo collection is to raise awareness for the unique beauty of this fragile locale through an artist’s eye and to encourage the creation and preservation of images of the Mississippi River Delta and its disappearing habitat for future generations.
Vanishing at a rate of one football field every fifteen minutes, this region consisting of 3 million acres of coastal wetlands and 40% of the salt marsh in the contiguous United States supports the economy of New Orleans with significant shipping traffic, providing approximately 18% of the United States oil supply and providing 16 % of the US's fisheries harvest. What’s at risk here “is a significant national asset”, said Stan Mathes, Director of Plaquemines Parish Economic Development.
Photography for the project began in the spring of 2000, shot on both black and white film and in color digital and has continued to the present day. In this collection, White has shot nearly every named location in lower Plaquemines Parish and has compiled a sizable collection of documentary-style often contemplative photographs of the most remote areas of the parish.
One such location is Pilottown, where the Crescent River Port Pilots’ Association has maintained an outpost for piloting ships for the last 100 years. After it was almost destroyed by Hurricane Katrina, White returned in April 2008 to photograph this one-of-a-kind town, the last manned outpost on the Mississippi River before you reach the Gulf of Mexico. He was able to document a few pilot houses that were being rebuilt, while the remainder of former homes along the river completely vanished.
“I have captured a rare glimpse of some of the most remote locations on the Louisiana coast”, said White. “The way of life that is so simple and peaceful down there on the Delta is just hanging by a thread. I feel that I can do my part for its preservation by showing what is still beautiful about it; that it is, and always has been, one of the most unique and spellbinding landscapes in the nation. I try to convey ‘sense of place’ in my photos; if the viewer can for one second sense the peace, solitude, and wonder I feel standing in these landscapes, then there would be no question about whether or not the Delta should be preserved."
The exhibition is a part of PhotoNOLA, (www.photonola.org) an annual celebration of photography in the Crescent City, coordinated by the New Orleans Photo Alliance in partnership with museums, galleries and alternative venues citywide. Following its debut at the Port of New Orleans, the exhibit will travel nationally before concluding its tour in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana where it is expected to remain on permanent exhibit there.

Pandora's Box
Whitmer's case is just too good though, he named his company Lagniappe Industries.
Sweet....he just wanted a little somethin' extra, brah.
Is it just me or does it seem like some of this stuff is scripted...Lagniappe Industries, Sunblock, etc?

I think she's now one of the most seasoned and skilled politicians in the city and I'd vote for her over any current mayoral candidate.
Having said that, there are still some really talented politicians in the city who could run for mayor....but I doubt they will.

Right on. I used to work for Dickie...he's good people. Nice to see the Kentucky cartel throwing him a shout out.
In case you had any doubt, the finest corn squeezin's in the world are made in Loretto, Ky.
I get a kick out of the T.V. commercial by those Tennessee boys where they're bragging that they are "the oldest registered distillery in the nation." Well good for them...while they were busy trying to be all legallike and get "registered", we were busy making the best whiskey on the planet.
BTW, don't ever make the mistake of calling that Tennessee crap, bourbon. Bourbon only comes from one place....the hills of Kaintuck.
While we're on the subject, did you know one of the greatest Louisiana novels ever written was by a Kentucky native? Can you name the book and author?

Sen. David Vitter (R-Formaldehyde)
So why is Vitter so sympathetic to the formaldehyde industry? Campaign finance records show that many of Louisiana's big formaldehyde polluters happen to be—you guessed it—Vitter campaign donors. He's received $9,000 from Dow Chemical's PAC, $5,000 from Monsanto's, $5,000 from ExxonMobil's, and $2,500 from the American Forest and Paper Association's. The American Forest and Paper Association is also a member of the Formaldehyde Council, an industry group whose views align with Vitter's (it's lobbied for an NAS review, too).Nice...the next thing you know he's going to go to bat for Chinese Drywall makers.
Everyone who got sick from a formaldehyde laced FEMA trailer....make sure you write a thank you letter to your senator who is looking out for his...cough...your best interest.

On the stinky cheese scale...
Patronage of the arts -- Nagin and the Municipal Auditorium: James Gill
I was pretty much dead on that they're planning on using federal and state tax dollars to create a recording studio, audio/video production house, etc. which would most likely put a number of local businesses out of business. Word is they've even struck a deal with this company:
SIR
...out of Nashville to come in and set up shop. Here's a good question, "How did they strike a deal with these guys before they got the bid?" This company's presence alone would destroy a handful of local businesses who have been struggling to survive in Post-K New Orleans.
So I would like to see Juneau and Mayfield stand in front of these struggling New Orleans business owners and justify how they're about to use their own tax dollars to put them out of business.....I cry bullshit.
Something tells me this thing will end up being another anchor around the city's neck. Plus a 50 year lease? No frikkin' way.
City council needs to put the kabosh on this. Send it back to the kitchen and see what the next administration cooks up.

The Politics As Usual Crowd: Georges, Murray Play Fast & Loose with Campaign Ethics Laws
James Perry Stands Up for Voters in Fight Against Political As Usual, Status Quo
NEW ORLEANS – Nonprofit executive and candidate for Mayor James Perry today found new reasons to continue his fight against political corruption when he discovered that both his rival campaigns have already committed ethics violations.
“Are you kidding me?” said Perry. “The next four years are going to look a whole lot like the last four years if one of these guys is elected.”
John Georges, who made headlines with a lavish black tie fundraiser costing thousands of dollars before announcing his candidacy, has failed to report any of the costs of his high dollar soiree as either an expenditure or an in-kind donation. This failure to follow simple campaign finance rules leads voters to wonder, who paid for the pomp and pageantry at the Hotel Monteleone? Who fronted the fried oysters and eggplant hollandaise? And why didn’t we get any?
Also not included in his first filing are thousands of dollars spent to date on focus groups, consultants and staff.
While “King Georges” failure to disclose who paid for his extravagant party and thousands of dollars in campaign expenditures shows a disrespect for transparency in government, Ed Murray’s ethics violation is even more egregious.
In a classic politics as usual fundraising scheme, Murray is taking money from expensive lobbyists who represent the very organizations – including insurance companies, trial lawyers, and river pilots - that Murray regulates as a member of the state senate. Those organizations may expect preferential treatment from Murray as a result of their lobbyists’ donations to his mayoral campaign.
At recent debate Murray was also the only candidate who has refused to release his tax returns.
Perry is concerned that these early ethics violations are indicative of a pattern. “It’s a game of hide and seek with these guys,” said Perry. “Georges is hiding who paid for his party and thousands in campaign expenditures and Murray is hiding how much he paid in taxes.”
“As head of two nonprofit organizations I have always put people first. I have a record of building coalitions, building organizations, and making a real difference in people’s lives, whether it’s helping homeowners, fighting discrimination or standing up to politicians and exposing corruption,” said Perry.
Perry has made stopping corruption a major focus of his campaign, suing current Mayor Nagin for illegal contracts and pledging to reform city contracting procedures to make them open, public and transparent. Perry is also setting an example by running an open and transparent grassroots campaign.
“The people of New Orleans have had enough of the status quo. We deserve leaders who hold themselves to higher standards,” said Perry. “We don’t need another mayor who’s in it for self-interest or special interests. It’s time to put progress ahead of politics and make a real change.”
James Perry has the executive experience as a non-profit CEO to navigate city hall and the courage to fix what needs to be fixed. He has a record of building coalitions, building organizations, and making a real difference in people’s lives, whether it’s helping homeowners, fighting discrimination or standing up to politicians and exposing corruption.
Oh schnizzel....here come the fireworks
Inspector general urges City Council to reject Municipal Auditorium deal
This plan is rapidly becoming a flash point behind the N.O. politico scene. I spent last night reading an email exchange between activist and former mayoral candidate, Leo Watermeier, and one of the plan's developers, Stewart Juneau....with an indignant Jackie Clarkson exchange thrown in.It looks like there is much concern over the plan from FQ preservationist groups as well.
Watermeier is demanding an economic feasibility study from Juneau. Juneau says the study exists but its confidential as an agreement with FEMA and a tax credit buyer are still in the works. Juneau claims the TP has a copy of the economic feasibility study, but that's yet to be determined.
Problem being the plan seems somewhat half-baked and it may go to a City Council vote before the public gets access to information like the feasibility study....in other words, they seem to be shoving it through the back door.
I don't know enough about the plan to make an educated evaluation...even after watching the video, I'm not really sure what "the 80 million dollar vision" is.
Right out of the gate I am concerned about the notion of using tax credits and FEMA money in a "public/private" partnership to create a for profit recording studio. There are a lot of recording studios in the metro area that are struggling to get by....a state funded recording studio would most likely drive a stake through their heart. And you know it wouldn't stop with recording...it will bleed over into video/film production and every other business aspect of entertainment. Even if they're suggesting all these companies are private investment companies....I suspect you would see a lot of favoritism as to who gets in and who doesn't.
I detect the strong odor of old school politics.
I'm not saying I'm against the development on face value, but I have to admit it looks to me like it could be one more grand set up (and kick back) with phantom resources....something we've seen all too many times in this city.
I like Quatrevaux's quote:
"Grand projects for entertainment centers are nice," he said, "but we have fire stations that have not been rebuilt and police stations that have not been rebuilt."
Exactly. At least you will have some place to be entertained while your house burns down. Not to mention we have a DA's office who for the first time in....i don't even know how long...is making real progress but is being forced to beg for their fiscal life.

Cao's liberal grin
As the Kentucky adage goes, "He was grinning like a shit eatin' possum." I have no idea what that means, it's not derogatory I can assure you...just one of those metaphors only country boys understand. I guess that's why I moved...I still don't understand it but it makes me laugh. Now I hope Vitter and the LA repugs launch an internal tirade against Cao, which will martyr him in his district and get him re-elected.
While I'm on Kentucky "sayin's" my favorite one ever is "Man, it's rainin' like a cow pissin' on a flat rock." Once again, have to have seen it to understand it.
Check Cao out on CNN:

Brian Denzer contends "What gets measured gets done"
Oyster, being the keystroke machine that he is, covers it for us.
If you're not aware of Brian's push for the Nolastat program, please get aware here.
It's called accountability, folks, and this program has been proven in other cities who have similar issues to New Orleans.
I've stated before that even above the contracting process itself, the biggest problem we have in this city is performance standards and our lack of ability to track the progress of departments and initiatives after companies have been contracted. Think about what a difference that could have made had we been tracking the IT department for the past 8 years, i.e., crime camz, 311, etc.
Think of it as a real time EKG for the entire city. Rapid feedback...rapid response. This just makes sense.

Meffert files Libel suit against Attorney General
Meffert stated, "Jim Letten has tarnished my name and my service to this city...he has clearly stated erroneous accusations about my ability to play the game, brah. C'mon, man....I'm gonna collect my thoughts and sue that dude!"
I kid...I kid....
I still just can't believe he has been so arrogant through this process. Some of you may remember I hinted back in May that Linda Meffert was under the gun as well. What I think this tells us is that Meffert refused to cooperate with the investigation....I think he may have even have refused to acknowledge it. This is pretty sad....he's such an idiot.
His reponse to the judgment in the civil suit was to rattle off an indignant letter to Gambit citing his family....the best thing he could have done if he truly cared about his family was to shut his big mouth and do what he could to keep his wife out of the pokey.
Meanwhile....don't max out on schadenfreude over this. I'm hearing that more indictments are coming and you may be surprised at the targets. Let's just say that the creation of the CTO position has turned into a gravity well for corruption....I wouldn't want to hold that position right now...ahem...
Correction: At one point I was begging for an editor...now I realize AZ readers are the editors.
There is only one U.S. Attorney General that's Eric Holder!. Mr Letten is the U.S. Attorney (sans general) for the Eastern District of Louisiana.
And I stand corrected once again. Thank you sir.
Call him what you will....round here they're calling him a fucking rock star and he's not even half way through his set.
Correction 2: Another brief correction: That (Meffert's response) wasn't just to Gambit, but a statement Meffert sent to all local media. I called to follow up on it and he was gracious enough to talk to me about how he thought the media coverage had been slanted.
Per KA Gambit
The End is Nigh...
Greg Meffert, wife Linda and vendor who paid for Nagin trips expected to be indicted today
Ironically enough, I'm currently watching both Letten and Nagin per webcast at the WWII Victory Theater dedication. Jim is gonna have to hustle down to Poydras to make that announcment. Nagin may be hustling down to LAI to catch a one way trip back to Havana.
Take note, Nawlins.....the times they are a changin'. The game is up, brah.

Maybe I'm being too CRYPTic
I have heard rumblings that Ciber's settlement to Active and Southern was around 5 million.Understand what I'm saying?
Beuller? Beuller? Voodoo contracting....Voodoo contracting....
Did we (the city) just pay Ciber's settlement?
Let me repeat that....DID WE JUST PAY FOR CIBER'S SETTLEMENT?
Also, why the fuck is Harrison Boyd's name not on this contract? Shouldn't the CTO sign and approve a whopping 6 million dollar addendum to a TECH contract? Am I missing something here?
If I was the maintenance manager in a building and the owner bought 6 million dollars worth of toilets...shouldn't I be in on that? (yeah i know that's a bad analogy, but I just ate burnt, frozen pizza for dinner and I'm in a bad mood.)
Would somebody...please....someone who is considered "a real journalist"....please beat these bitches down until they give us an answer as to why we paid this contractor an extra 6 million bucks through a one page contract addendum which explains nothing?
Can I get some fucking love, man? C,mon guys.
This city is hemorrhaging cash right now and we're all taking another bong hit while Nagin is stroking 6 million dollar checks?
Ok..yeah...I'm taking bong hits too, but shit...they're shuffling our flat screen out the back door...can't a zombie get some help?

The biggest ego in town
Among the letters and statements of support, were there any from city officials or Meffert’s old boss, Mayor Ray Nagin? Meffert laughed at the question. “What do you think?” he said.
Here's what I think....I think Muppet may be the biggest damn fool in the history of New Orleans politics and if he had any sense he would follow Ray Nagin's lead.
Muppet goes on the stand for 7 hours and spills tons of information under oath, then is brazen enough to threaten a lawsuit against Da Paper....one he could never win....which "if" it actually happened would open him up to even more time on the stand and even that much more opportunity to incriminate himself through the discovery process. What a pregnant idea.
Now compare that with the information I just gleaned today....I got word that within the last 2 weeks Nagin has been quietly shuffled in and out of federal court no less than 3 times. He has apparently been slithering down to the other end of Poydras street for what? I don't know...but I think we can all guess.
See the difference? At least Nagin knows when to lay low.
I don't think Muppet is gonna have the opportunity to file a libel suit, I think by the end of the week he's gonna be stocking up on soap on a rope.
The City that Responsibilty Forgot
The most outrageous statement in Blakely's Id rant is this quip:
"New Orleanians expected someone else to do it all along."
Never mind that we ARE fucking doing it all alone. We are busting our asses to rebuild this city and we've done one helluva job in spite of prima donna fuckers like him sucking money out of the system to sit on his ass and lather up his ego.
What a royal dicksmack.
Alright, got that outta the way.
Saints are fo' true, baby!!
